Pre-Oxidized and Polyimide: Flame Retardant Properties 1. Introduction to Polyimide (PI) Polyimide (PI) is a high-performance polymer known for its exceptional thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. It is widely used in aerospace, electronics, and fire-resistant applications due to its inherent flame retardancy. Key properties of standard polyimide: - High thermal stability (up to 400–500°C in inert atmospheres). - Low flammability(Limiting Oxygen Index, LOI ~40–50). - Self-extinguishing (does not sustain combustion easily). 2. Concept of Pre-Oxidized Polyimide pre-oxidized polyimide is enhance its flame resistance and thermal stability. 3. Flame Retardant Mechanisms Pre-oxidation may enhance PI’s flame resistance through: - Formation of a protective char layer (barrier effect against heat and oxygen). - Increased cross-linking (reduces volatile gas release during combustion). - Improved thermal stability(delays decomposition at high temperatures). - Reduced flammability(self-extinguishing behavior). - Enhanced thermal resistance (stable up to 600°C).
